Lorene Carey

Lorene Carey is the narrator. She is a black, high school student. She lives in the black suburb of Philadelphia called Yeadon. She attends the all-white, prestigious St. Paul's School in New Hampshire. She is afraid to attend St. Paul's, but Lorene is a brave girl. She faces adversity, but she is strong in character and keeps her head held high. Lorene is very ambitious as well. She strives for the highest grades and studies all the time. When she does not achieve them, she gets upset and frustrated. She does not handle failure well. For example, she fails calculus twice and she bursts out crying due to this failure.
