Chapter 5 Summary

Dave goes home and tries to settle back into his normal routine. However, Dave feels he cannot just sit around and wait to be sent to prison. Dave decides he needs to go to Montana and find evidence to discredit Mapes, the prime witness against him, in order to prove himself innocent. At first Dave wants to leave Alafair behind with his cousin, but when the little girl becomes upset at the idea, Dave decides to take her with him. Dave and Alafair make the drive in his pickup truck. Once in Montana, Dave rents a house and gets Alafair settled in a small Catholic school near the home of a woman who has agreed to babysit for them. As soon as Alafair is settled, Dave takes a drive to the compound where Sally Dio lives.
