Summary

Chapter 7 opens with Augusta thinking about the rain in California, which leads to flashbacks about New Orleans. Augusta remembers the day she told her mother she was leaving for good, to go live with Bela Nova. Then she recalls living with Bela Nova, working with her mentor’s spell book and learning the song of Lanora, a Voodoo saint who is also Augusta’s ancestor. Augusta has one more important flashback in this chapter about her first love, Dudley Lee, who was the son of her mentor Bela Nova. Dudley was a handsome happy go-lucky young man who was already engaged to a wealthy heiress when Augusta met him. She decided to look in her mentor’s spell book for a spell or a hex that would help her win Dudley’s affections away from his fiancee.
