Point of View

The novel is narrated in the third-person, switching between the perspectives of Byron, Benny, Covey, and other supporting characters. Byron and Benny are estranged siblings of Caribbean descent who must come together after their mother’s death to learn about their family secrets.

Although both Byron and Benny have the same parents and were raised similarly, their experiences with childhood and young adulthood have diverged significantly. Benny’s point of view appears childlike because she is still mentally in an earlier phase of her life and is still looking for acceptance from her brother and their parents. She is not confident about the path her life has taken, but she still wants to know that she is valued.
