Summary
Zora receives a letter from her son-in-law telling her to be ready the next day because he has come to get her out of Sarajevo. She quickly packs her suitcase. She sniffs turpentine to stay awake, and she begins to hallucinate. Her lips start to freeze together. The fire has gone out, but when she inadvertently throws some turpentine on the stove, it reignites the fire. She knows she cannot go to sleep because she may die in her sleep. Many people are dying of hypothermia in Sarajevo. She plans to throw all of her books in the fire to keep it going.
Stephen comes in and shows her a picture of her family. She had tried throughout her ordeal to block them from her memory, but details start to come back. Stephen looks shocked at the sight of her...
