Summary

In Chapter 13, “Logging Out of Passport Twitter,” when Ziyad visited Puerto Rico with Timothy in 2017, they were looking for an escape. During a zip-lining outing, Ziyad and Timothy met a woman named Brenda. Her kindness and generosity reminded Ziyad of the importance of building Black communities. They want to stop trying to escape Black life “in pursuit of white acceptance” (197).

Ziyad has “one white friend left”: Cloud (198). The majority of Ziyad’s and Cloud’s friendship has centered around substance abuse. The friends spent most of their time drinking and partying. After Ziyad was assaulted at a nightclub, they were reluctant to return to the establishment. When they refused to go with Cloud, Cloud stormed off.
