Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus symbolizes safety. After spending the majority of her childhood in foster care, Bitter feels that Eucalyptus is the only true home she has ever known. She is so fearful of the world that she almost never leaves her room or the school campus. She believes that if she stays inside Eucalyptus's walls, she will be safe from every trauma or danger.

Miss Virtue

As her name suggests, Miss Virtue's character symbolizes virtue. She is good and kind, gracious and empathetic. Despite all of her good qualities, however, Bitter often notices something sinister about Miss Virtue. She later discovers that Miss Virtue is a fallen angel who once had malicious intents. Therefore, the author uses her character to illustrate the human capacity for change. Despite her background, Miss Virtue is still able to pursue goodness.
