Lucille
Lucille is the fictional city in which the novel is set. Although Bitter loves her life at Eucalyptus, she hates that the school is located so close to the city center. Every day she must see and hear the protests occurring in the streets below. She knows that Assata is fighting for freedom and equality, but she does not believe that change can really occur in Lucille. The men who run the city do not care for their citizens, and she doubts Assata's protests will alter this dynamic.
By the end of the novel, Bitter begins to see her city differently. She realizes that her work with Assata and her friends has already helped inspire some social changes. She allows herself to hope in the city's rebirth.
