Summary
In Chapter 21, in the present Frances says of herself that she has learned to be more careful about who she believes. She remembers that her mother told her that no one ever said what they were really thinking. She warned Frances that she needed to learn to read between the lines. Frances explains she did not learn what her mother was trying to teach her until she was in court. She came to realize the law was about which side told the most convincing story. She indicates she had to learn quickly to win at the game, even though it appeared to others that she had lost.
Back at Lyntons, Cara later suggested they have a picnic on the roof. While they were eating, Cara asked Frances if she missed her mother. Frances admitted she missed the mother she had as a child...
