Summary
In Chapter 5, In Peter and Cara’s room, they had made a table with a long board on packing cases. More cases served as chairs. Pasta was drying on lines strung around the room, but no one was cooking. Frances realized her mother’s dress was not the right choice to wear. Cara shocked Frances by hugging her in greeting. In the present, Frances notes she frequently sees women hugging each other, but wonders how they know they are about to be hugged.
In person, Cara was different from Frances’ image of her. Frances thought she was a hot-headed Italian. She was not Italian, she could only speak some of the language because Peter had paid for lessons. Cara also appeared more relaxed than Frances imagined her. As Peter and Cara talked, Frances believed they were very much in love.
Frances was tipsy...
