Summary
In Chapter 81, the year is 1920 and the Greeks are officially at war with the Ottoman Empire. The narrator observes King Alexander of Greece, who is riding his motorcycle when his dog, Fritz, runs off. He finds the dog in a fight with an ape, named Moritz, and ends up getting involved in the fight. He is severely wounded.
When Alexander’s wounds become infected, he is in need of an arm amputation, but no one thinks a king should be amputated. Days go by, and eventually Alexander dies. Surprisingly, King Constantine returns to the throne. This sets off the return of the royal family and Greece this loses the support of their allies.
In Chapter 82, France and Italy withdraw their support of Greece, but the Greeks still think they can win the war. Mustafa creates his own political party and becomes a...
