Summary
In Chapter 1, Greta worked as a transcriber for a sex therapist named Om in Hudson. He wanted his sessions transcribed as he was writing a book. When Greta heard FEW’s first sessions, she began calling her Big Swiss, “because she was tall and from Switzerland” (1). Big Swiss’s voice was also arresting.
Greta “liked knowing people’s secrets” (3). At her last job, “she’d sorted and counted pills” (3). Then one day she gave a man too much oxy and he “committed suicide in the pharmacy, after hours” (3). Finding his body reminded Greta of her mother’s suicide when she was 13. Her fiancé at the time was horrified she was not triggered. She tried therapy, but did not like it. She preferred to be the listener.
