Women’s Relationships
The relationship between Drue and Daphne and the relationship between Daphne and Darshi represent the contrasting roles that women can play in the life of the other woman. These three girls have been members of a triangle of affection since Daphne began attending school at Lathrop School when she was in the sixth grade. Daphne indicates at one point that Darshi had accepted that while she was Darshi’s friend, she was Drue’s “creature” (78).
Daphne is enthralled by Drue from the time she first sees her the first day of sixth grade. Darshi tries to warn Daphne that Drue will only hurt her, but Daphne chooses not to listen.
