Structure
Big Magic is divided into six parts plus a short conclusion. The book is structured thematically and each part is titled with that section's theme. Most parts are of roughly equal length. Parts Two, Three, Four, and Five are all 50-60 pages long. Part One is only slightly short at around 30 pages. Part Six is a dramatic structural departure in comparison to the preceding sections at only six pages long, and the conclusion is a mere paragraph.
Big Magic is a mix of anecdotal stories, advice, and encouragement all organized by theme. Rather than following a chronology or linear structure of any kind, Gilbert groups her stories and wisdom according to their unifying message. All the content in Part One, for example, relates to the theme of courage. Part Two is structured around the theme of enchantment, Part Three is all about permission, etc.
