Summary
Chapter 43
Jane decides not to attend book club because Ziggy is still crying. He tells her how several of the kids say they aren’t allowed to play with Ziggy. This hurts and angers Jane. Jane pays the babysitter anyway and sends her off. The babysitter’s mother, Irene, shows up to return the money, saying it was no inconvenience. Jane talks to her about the bullying accusations. Irene assures her that Ziggy is a good child. She was a teacher and said she could spot bullies, and Ziggy wasn’t a bully.

At the book club, the parents are debating about the petition. Celeste is trying to listen, but she has a hard time focusing. It sounds like the majority of the parents believe that the petition is outrageous, with some even defending Ziggy. Celeste feels so out of place and...
