Summary
Chapter 4 begins with the good-natured Nogales' dropping Irene at home. She falls asleep on the couch, wrapped in Luce's hand-crocheted afghan and awakes in the morning thinking only of checking on Luce. Before Irene can text Nogales for a ride to the hospital, Luce walks through the door in a hurry to make it to a 12-step meeting. The two walk to the local church in whose basement they have been attending meetings for nearly a year, as Irene explains how much she and Luce had been looking forward to and planning their upcoming one-year anniversary of being clean from drugs.
