Structure
Suleika Jaouad's memoir Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted is divided into Parts One and Two. Each part contains a series of titled chapters, totaling 35 in all including the epilogue. The chapters contained within Part One trace Suleika's bout with cancer from her early symptoms through the final days of her chemotherapy treatment. The chapters enclosed within Part Two trace Suleika's final days of treatment through her work to transition back into normal life. The reader might refer to the early passages of Chapter 25, "The In-Between Place," in order to better understand these structural divisions. Chapter 25, which opens Part Two, begins with a brief excerpt from Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor: "Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick . . .
