Summary

In Chapter 30, "Written on the Skin," Suleika visits Nitasha in Detroit. Suleika admires the way Nitasha "has turned her predicament into art" (267). During the visit, Nitasha takes Suleika to see a psychic. The reading resonates with Suleika.

The longer Suleika drives, the more she thinks about Will. She cannot help but wonder why their relationship ended. After visiting a happy couple who made their relationship work despite terminal illness, Suleika's questions abound.

In Chapter 31, "The Value of Pain," 40 days into her trip, Suleika starts seeing "ghosts of Will" everywhere (274). When she arrives in "Pine Ridge, one of the poorest Native American reservations in the country," she is surprised to meet one of Will's friends, Nick (276). Their time together complicates the way Suleika processes her former relationship. She realizes that she never confronted what happened. Instead, she had tried "to destroy...
