Summary
In Chapter 17, "Chronology of Freedom," because Suleika was used to living "betwixt cultures and countries, creeds and customs," spending so much time in Saratoga during treatment amplified her restlessness (141). By the end of the summer, however, Suleika started yearning "for a home" (142). After her release from Hope Lodge, Suleika and Will found an apartment in the city. She felt free for the first time in a while. She felt as if she were living her own life. However, while "going solo to chemo" made her feel independent, it also amplified her loneliness (147).
In Chapter 18, "The Mutt," Suleika began longing for a dog. Her doctors worried a dog would compromise her immune system. Eventually she convinced a doctor to give her approval. With Will, she picked out a mutt whom she named Oscar. Being with Oscar made Suleika happy and purposeful. He...
