Corruption
The author introduces the theme of corruption through the character Abbasi and his obsessing over all the men he has to bribe in order to keep his factory going, as well as how he wrestles with this morally. When readers first see Abbasi, he is hosting an official from the state Electricity Board with whom he has to bribe with the sum of 500 rupees and a gift of a shirt made from the factory (25). After the factory closes, Abbasi drives to the Canara Club and thinks about the corruption.
