Summary
A second person narrator begins by describing the Sultan's Battery, which is a large black fort that appears to the left as you head from Kittur to Salt Market Village. The best way to explore the fort is to park the car by the main road and then walk uphill for a half an hour. The fort is in an advanced state of decay even though it is declared a protected site by the Archaeological Survey of India. It enshrines the memory of Tippu Sultan but there has been no attempt at preservation. Giant banyan trees sprout among the walls and person has to avoid thorns and piles of goat dung to walk to one of the holes in the walls of the fort.
