Summary
A second person narrator begins this story by describing the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Maidan, which was formerly the King George V Memorial Maidan. It is a patch of open ground in the center of Kittur that fills up in the evenings with people playing cricket, flying kites and teaching their children how to ride bikes. The narrator explains that all political rallies are held here. From the maidan, the Hyder Ali Road leads to the Central Market. The Town Hall of Kittur and the Havelock Henry District Hospital and both of Kitturs premier hotels, the Hotel Premier Intercontinental and the Taj Mahal International are all within walking distance of the market. In 1988, the first temple for Kittur's Hoyka community opened up within the area of the maidan.
