Summary

In Chapter 3, Liz becomes antsy when Wes is a few minutes late picking her up from the party. Liz's dad met Helena about a year after his wife died when they were together in an elevator that became stuck. Helena is “the polar opposite” of Liz's mother. Liz's mother wore dresses, baked bread, and gardened. Helena is sarcastic, prefers take-out, and wears jeans and T-shirts. Liz ignores a text from Jocelyn to avoid explaining her plans for the evening. Wes is critical of the dress Liz chose – a mustard-colored jumper with flower buttons. When Wes calls Liz “Libby,” she says, “No one calls me that” (53). Her mother had, but no one else does.
