Summary

Scene 5 takes place in 1973 in a hotel room in Venice. Emma is in bed reading and Robert is looking out of the window. They discuss visiting the island Torcello the next day. Emma is reading a book by an author named Spinks, represented by Jerry. Emma says it’s very good. Robert, who is a publisher, reveals that he turned down the book when Jerry sent it to him. Robert tells Emma that when he was at the post office earlier, they tried to give him a letter addressed to her, seeing that their names were the same and therefore assuming they were married. Robert discusses how he did not think this sort of thing would happen in England and was a sign of the unprofessionalism of the staff because they had no way of knowing if they knew each other or...
