Summary

Scene 1 takes place in a pub in 1977 in the spring. Emma sits at a table while Jerry approaches with two drinks and sits down. They begin their conversation with small talk. Their discussion reveals that they have not seen each other in two years. Emma is married to a man named Robert and Jerry is married to a woman named Judith. Both have children. Jerry remembers throwing Emma’s daughter Charlotte into the air and catching her when she was small. Jerry reveals that he has heard rumors that Emma has been spending time with a man named Casey, an author who Jerry represents as his agent. Jerry says he resents the rumors because Emma and Casey have only been seeing each other for an occasional drink whereas he, Jerry, had an affair with Emma for seven years and no one knew...
