Summary
In Chapter 25, the Reverend Lyle delivers a sermon about loving enemies, doing good to those who hate, blessing those who curse, and praying for those who mistreat you. He draws from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount but begins to argue that America, as the most powerful nation on Earth, should love its enemies. This prompts members in the audience to shout out and question Lyle. Some leave the church. Another calls Lyle a terrorist sympathizer. Willa urges everyone to be respectful, even if they disagree with Lyle. Half the people leave, and the other half stay. Lyle carries on as if normal by proceeding with hymns. After singing, Lyle delivers the benediction, asking the Lord to protect, bless, and care for the people. The rest of the people file out as the service ends.
