Summary
Part 4 entitled "The Cruelest Winter" begins with the Italians starting to form resistance groups and the Nazis losing in Chapter 22. Pino tells his father about his role in the resistance and Anna agrees to help him smuggle a radio into the Lella house over Christmas. They manage to get past the Nazi guards without suspicion by creating a diversion, then Anna tells Pino that she was married once and her husband had been killed in a battle shortly after their wedding, which does not affect Pino’s feelings for Anna.
In Chapter 23, Pino and Anna are confronted by Mimo the following morning, but Pino still cannot tell Mimo the truth. The winter ends up taking a huge toll on the city of Milan as it struggles to find supplies for heating. General Leyers continues to divert supplies towards the Germans as they are...
