The Hospital
The hospital is the setting where the novel opens. After Olga gets sick and must undergo surgery, Krug begins splitting his time between home and the hospital. However, when the surgery proves unsuccessful, Krug realizes his wife will die. Instead of clinging to her fading physical presence, he stands, staring out the hospital window and observing the surrounding scenes.
Krug's House
Krug's house is one of the primary settings of the novel. After Krug's wife dies, he struggles to get back home. He must cross the bridge several times and navigate interrogations from Paduk's soldiers. Once he is finally home, however, Krug's once-comforting space is saturated with images, memories, and ghosts associated with Olga. Throughout the novel, the author depicts Krug either interacting with David in the house, or isolating himself in his study in an attempt to maintain emotional stability.
