Adam Krug
Adam Krug is the main character of Bend Sinister. As a renowned academic teaching at the local university, Krug is known for his philosophic research, writings, and lectures. He lives with his wife, Olga, and young son, David. At the start of the novel, Krug is splitting his time between home and the hospital. Though Olga has only been admitted for a surgery, the surgery is unsuccessful, and she dies shortly thereafter. Over the course of the chapters that follow, Krug attempts to reconcile his loss with the increasingly tumultuous political climate.
Unsure how to tell David that his mother is dead, Krug has his friend, Ember, deal with Olga's funeral arrangements, while he rushes off to the country with his son. He stays in his friend Maximov's cottage. While there, he spends time talking to Maximov about the nation's current state of affairs and Krug's dangerous...
