Summary
In Chapter 12, despite his interview with Paduk, Krug tells himself that if he keeps "lying low nothing harmful" will happen (136). Meanwhile, the University has "ceased to exist," and political turmoils worsen (136). Those associated with the University continue to hold meetings. The administration continues contacting Krug about assisting their endeavours. Krug insists that the government would not dare “to arrest him” (136).
To distract himself from these concerns, Krug tries occupying himself by returning to his research and writing. However, he feels incapable of focusing his mind. He feels as if he will "never write another book," and that he will never recover from his wife's death (140).
