Summary

Chapter 13 resumes a few months later. La Vie Francaise is now an affluent political journal. The Duroys had spent that summer campaigning for a new cabinet. Georges works closely with the minister of foreign affairs Laroche-Mathieu to write about the political situation in Morocco. Georges is jealous of Laroche-Mathieu, who speaks so eloquently. Georges is sick and tired of Mme. Walter, whom he deems dramatic and annoying. His affection for Mme. de Marelle, however, is at an all-time high. After weeks of ignoring Mme. Walter, he is convinced that the woman must know that he is no longer interested. He is surprised to receive a summons from her Mme. Walter to meet at his apartment on the Rue de Constantinople.
