Chapters 4-6 Summary
With Sergeant Everly and 12 other servicemen aboard, Weston's two boats make a stop at Bohol Island before proceeding island-to-island toward Mindanao, then Brisbane. The entourage sails only a few hours a day then hides from detection by the Japanese. Along the way, at each stop they pick up more servicemen also trying to get to Mindanao. But Weston harbors a conviction they will never reach Mindanao, much less Australia. When the men finally reach the military base at Mindanao, they discover it is a Japanese provincial capitol originally built by Americans before the war but abandoned after the American surrender At the still-operating American base, "Weston's Weary Would-Be Warriors," as they now call themselves are welcomed to the island. After a long trek through the jungle, Weston and his men finally reach a house where he is introduced to "General" Fertig...
