Summary
In the 17th chapter, Alice narrates in the first-person past. She had lived in Holland with the other Puritans who had left England. After Dorothy married William, he said he wanted to move to the New World so he could make more money and have more power. Dorothy did not want to go because she did not want to leave her daughter’s grave behind. Alice promised to come with her, and got her husband, Edward Southworth, to agree. They waited years for the English to grant them a charter for a new colony. Dorothy had a son and Alice had two children before they finally received word that they could go.
