Summary
At the beginning of Chapter 14, the viewing party is winding down, and Rill admits that she almost does not want to leave. There are so many toys and treats to enjoy; it seems like heaven compared to Mrs. Murphy's place. Rill steals a cookie to bring back to Camellia. Meanwhile, she overhears Miss Tann lying again about the conditions of her home for the children. Again, Rill does not say anything. She wonders whether the people there know that she and her siblings are not orphans, that Briny and Queenie are coming back for them. A couple is holding Rill's baby brother, Gabion, who is now called "Robby." They ask Miss Tann if Rill is his sister, but she lies and says that Robby's only sister is a newborn who had already been adopted. She says that his mother died in childbirth and...
