Point of View

The novel is written from the first person point of view of the protagonist, Bess. This point of view has numerous repercussions throughout the novel.

In the 2008 timeline, Joni, Bess, and Evangeline spend all of their time together as they are alone in a quiet house in Greece. Because the novel is written from the first person point of view, the reader only learns what it is that Bess is thinking and feeling even though all three girls directly influence each other. Bess does make assumptions about what her friends are thinking and feeling. These assumptions are sometimes accurate such as when she knows that all three of them are unhappy, and some of them are inaccurate such as when she assumes Evangeline does not want Bess to enter a relationship with Theo because of the disparity in wealth and social class between the two...
