Section I
In September, Gaute let himself in the Finsland Church. He sat in a pew recalling the many times he’d been in the church. Later, he walked to the stairs to the church tower. Once at the narrow top, he saw the black bell hanging above him in the darkness. He tapped the bell… the tone was the same as he remembered. After he walked back down, he stopped by the organ hardly believing that the same organ still existed. He tried to remember something that Teresa had taught him but couldn’t. He reflected on how she had been there when his father was christened, when Kare was confirmed and when he was christened during the fires.
