Ofunne
Ofunne is the main character and first person narrator of "Becoming the Baby Girl." At the start of the story, Ofunne leaves her hometown for university. On her way to the bus station, her father tells her to remember her origins, her goals, and to carefully choose with whom she involves herself. Ofunne bids her parents a tearful goodbye, desperate not to forget her father's advice. In her early days on campus, Ofunne is confident and assured. She dismisses her classmates' compliments, repeatedly repeating her father's words to herself.
One day during an exam, a group of armed men enter the classroom. One of them touches Ofunne inappropriately, and pressures her to sleep with him. Furious, Ofunne insults the man. The man reports her to the professor for cheating, and the professor writes her up. Though Ofunne wants to be the girl her parents expect her to be...
