Summary
ROUND TWO – Lucky said Cassius became even more determined after he lost the Golden Gloves championship. He refused to drink soda or touch a cigarette, and went to bed at 10 every night. Lucius admired his ability to focus. They stayed together and alert when they went downtown after school. They saw signs Cash painted. When they stopped to admire a bicycle one day, the owner and his wife rushed out. The man was angry but his wife, slightly softer, told them to “get on home” (23). The store owners knew they lived in the West End, which was one of the few neighborhoods where Blacks could own a house. There were signs around the city that said “Whites Only” (23). Cassius called his mother Momma Bird. When he was very young, he and Momma Bird were refused a drink of water at a store downtown...
