Helen Joy Davidman

Helen Joy Davidman, known as Joy, is first married to Bill Gresham and then to C.S. “Jack” Lewis. She uses the name Davidman in her career as a writer. Like many characters in this novel, Joy is based on a real person. J Joy is outspoken and brash, especially compared to what is generally expected of polite women of this time period. She recognizes those traits in herself, but she is unable to quell that part of her nature. She tends to recognize her faults, but she is unable to change them. Joy is loving and desperately needs love in return. While she is desperately in love with Jack from very early in their relationship, she turns to other men for physical comfort when Jack continues to insist their relationship is only friendship.
