Structure
This memoir is written in a linear fashion in the sense that it begins with a description of the author’s despair as a result of the divorce and ends with the author’s realization that she has built a new structure of friends for herself through Duchess. What happens between these two points is a winding path that takes the reader back and forth between the author’s adulthood and her childhood to explore the issues and traumas who have made her who she is.
Exposition is given throughout the memoir with the author sharing experiences about her childhood almost up until the ending. The author’s first meeting with Lyle could be considered the point at which the action begins to rise because it is at this point that the author realizes that she is worthy of good friends.
