The Power of Love
There are multiple examples of this theme in the book. Arguably the most important is the love between Ethan and Lena. When Sarafine is trying to break into Ravenwood Manor to attack Lena, Macon and other family members seek to protect her with their magical powers. However, they are unsuccessful and it seems Sarafine might kill Lena. Then Ethan arrives and he is not only able to break through the protective circle of his family, he and Lena combines are a force too strong for Sarafine. This leads several people to believe Ethan has magical powers of his own. Macon goes so far as to accuse Amma of keeping Ethan's power secret from him. It's not until Ridley gets Ethan away from Lena that Ethan realizes the power is in their combined love.
