"A Crack in the Plaster" takes place on October 9. Ethan wakes in Lena's bedroom. There is writing all over the walls and Ethan realizes it's Lena's poetry. Lena says most Casters can control their gifts by the time they're nearing sixteen but Lena has little control over hers. She says Aunt Del is a Palimpsest who can "read time," Ridley is a Siren, Larkin is an Illusionist, and her Uncle Barclay is a Shifter. Lena gives Ethan other information about her family as well and expresses that her greatest desire has been to fit in with humans her own age.
