Summary
In Chapter 18, Qian recalls her mother beginning to regularly vocalize her desire to leave the United States. However, Qian’s father did not seem to share that view. Qian’s mother started graduate school, with which there were some costs involved. Qian’s parents appeared to be making a little more money. Qian began fourth grade and found the teacher to be generally ineffective. Qian’s parents began to argue fairly often, perhaps due to their disagreement about whether they should stay in America or leave. Qian became increasingly aware of the fact that many people in America had lives that were financially much better than the lives that Qian and her parents lived at the time. By the fifth grade, Qian decided that she wanted to become a lawyer, as adults often made a lot of money. However, whenever she shared this plan...
