California

Most of the books’ events took place in the state of California. When Nic was born, David and Vicki were living in Berkeley. After the divorce, Vicki went to live in Los Angeles. After David and Karen married, they moved to Inverness. Nic attended school in California until graduating from high school. Nic left California multiple times during his years of addiction, but he spent most of his time in California.

Divorce

David and Karen divorced several years after Nic was born. Karen moved to Los Angeles, and David and Karen agreed on shared custody, with Nic spending the school year at David’s house, and summers and holidays at Karen’s. David eventually worried that the divorce had impaired Nic’s development and mental wellbeing, and he regretted the fact that Nic had to repeatedly travel between homes.
