Summary
The book opens with an introduction. David Sheff, the book’s author, was a professional writer with three children. David is married to Karen, his second wife. His oldest, Nic, was at college and was a recovering methamphetamine addict. David’s younger children, Jasper and Daisy, were eight and five years old respectively. One day, Nic came home from college at the beginning of a school break. David, Karen, Jasper, and Daisy were all happy to see him. In the evening, Nic asked to borrow the car so that he could go to an addiction support meeting. David acquiesced. Nic did not return until very late. After Nic returned, it was clear to David that Nic had relapsed and started taking meth again. David then writes in narration about his inability to help Nic fight his addiction.
