Summary
Seventeen – Rockhold wakes from a restless, nightmare-filled sleep. As he starts his day, narration reveals several things about his relationship with Jimmie – that the latter had a complicated, not-always-legal set of business dealings; that Rockhold was an assistant and troubleshooter; and that their last communication had involved Jimmie asking Rockhold to call, which was not unusual. But, narration comments, “…there was something wrong about its timing. The early hours of the morning, Greek time” (189). Narration also describes how Rockhold calms his building anxiety about his boss by taking things one thing at a time, and also his impression of Naomi – that she is distant, remote, and a “smooth actor … not to be underrated” (185). Later, his investigations result in him tracking Naomi first to the hut and then to the hotel, discovering her interactions with Faoud.
