Summary
Thirteen – Narration moves backwards in time, to just after Naomi and Sam arrived at the house. When they got there, Carissa explained what she thought happened – that Jimmie came downstairs when he heard a noise, and Faoud panicked, hitting him with the poker from the fireplace. After hearing the story, Naomi had a moment of intense grief and remorse, narration commenting on how she had had no idea that losing her father would upset her so much. Sam, meanwhile, became increasingly angry and threatened to leave, but Carissa said that if she does, she (Carissa) would tell the police that she was involved. Naomi also insisted that Sam was a full participant in what happened, and that she needed Sam’s help.
