Summary
Five – Over the next few days, Naomi and Sam talk about what to do, Naomi monitoring the news to see if the man had been captured, or if there were any reports of such people missing. Narration comments on how important it was for her to have Sam’s company – this “could not be a solitary endeavor. She needed a platonic lover in her orbit” (53). They take the man some food, learn he speaks English and French, that he came from the sea, and that his name is Faoud. However, even as he answers their questions, Sam feels he is hiding something. At the same time, Naomi starts to feel a little uncomfortable – that Faoud being as apparently educated as he is somehow makes her less of a savior, less generous.
