Maya's Guitar
Maya's guitar is a symbol of her artistic spirit, something that sets her apart from the other inhabitants of Beartown. Though we learn late in the novel that her antipathy for hockey is somewhat feigned, she is not a big sports fan, and she prefers music. This also sets her apart from her parents. They are both very competitive, whereas she is happier with solitary or collaborative pursuits, playing alone or in the garage with Peter. The guitar will be Maya's ticket out of Beartown, as she grows up to be a professional musician.
