Connection and Attachment

Throughout the novel, Sam defines love and connection according to her relationship with her older sister Elena. For as long as Sam can remember, Elena has been “[h]er guide,” her support, and her confidante (235). During their tumultuous childhood, Sam learned that “Elena would take care of them” (62). She therefore attached herself to Elena in order to feel safe and secure. In the narrative present, therefore, Sam continues to tell herself that “[t]his [is] love: the two of them in the kitchen at the end of the day. The one bond that [will] last their whole lives” (16). On its surface, Sam’s connection with her sister is pure and simple. It is a bond formed in childhood, that Sam believes can withstand any hardship and that can buoy them through any trial.
